Put-in-Bay at a glance
Put-in-Bay is a village on South Bass Island in Lake Erie, in Ottawa County. The island has cottages, houses, and condominiums, some used in summer and some lived in all year. Waterfront lots, inland streets, and homes with marina or dock access sell as different kinds of property.
You reach the island by boat. Miller Ferry leaves from Catawba and carries cars and passengers to Put-in-Bay and Middle Bass. In 2026 that season runs roughly mid-March to late November, with no winter service. Jet Express is a passenger boat from Port Clinton, and that Port Clinton route ends in late October 2026. Showings, inspections, and closings are harder outside ferry season.
Island practicalities
Golf carts are a normal way to get around the village in season. The village requires a permit. Check the current rule before you plan on one.
Ask whether a house is on public water and sewer or a private well and septic, who services it, and what happens if the house is empty in winter. Also ask how you get there, and how a contractor gets there, when the car ferry is not running.
Rentals
As of October 2026, the Village of Put-in-Bay allows rentals as a special use with a one-week minimum, plus a village business license and lodging tax. Put-in-Bay Township outside the village treats stays of 7 to 90 days as a conditional use. Ottawa County has a lodging tax and registration for stays under 30 days. Confirm the rule for the exact parcel. This is general information, not legal advice. Details and sources: Lake Erie short-term rental rules.
Winter living
When Miller Ferry stops for the winter, people and freight reach South Bass by small plane. Griffing Flying Service flies reserved charters from Erie-Ottawa International Airport in Port Clinton, and Island Air Taxi (Put-in-Bay Airport page) is based at Put-in-Bay Airport and flies sunrise to sunset, year-round, weather permitting. Both checked Oct 24, 2026. Wind, fog, and ice still cancel trips.
Some services stay open. The Miller Ferry winter list (checked Oct 24, 2026) names Island Hardware Store and Market, a fuel stop, the post office, and the library among them. Put-in-Bay EMS runs advanced life support ambulances, and its building has a walk-in clinic for minor care. Serious cases go to the mainland. Hours change; call before you count on any of it.

Prices
A median is not cited here. Realtor.com's Put-in-Bay place page, as of October 2026, does not publish a median sold price. Island sales are few, so one or two closings can swing a midpoint. Waterfront, inland, and condo sales are not the same market. Ask for recent sales of similar houses instead of a single island number.
Good to check for any Put-in-Bay address
- Ferry access for the months you will use the house, including winter.
- Village versus township, because rental rules are not the same.
- Water, sewer, well, or septic, and winter operation.
- Whether a golf cart permit is part of how you would use the property. Check the village rule.
- The school for the exact address. Put-in-Bay Local serves the island.

Realtor.com Put-in-Bay place page, as of October 2026 (checked Oct 24, 2026), does not publish a median sold price. A ZIP listing price is not used here. Few island sales make a median swing. Source: Realtor.com Put-in-Bay housing market.
A median, when one is published, is a midpoint for the sales in that window, not a value for any one home. On this shore the count of sales is small, so the midpoint can jump.
