Checking an address against nearby industrial sites, and signing up for alerts

Free public tools for seeing what regulated facilities are near a Lucas County address, and how to get county emergency alerts by text, phone, or email.

Much of the Toledo area has rail lines, a port, refineries, tank terminals, and factories near homes, as most older industrial cities do. This page lists free public tools for seeing what is near a specific address, and how to sign up for official alerts. It describes places and facilities only. General information, not legal, health, or environmental advice.

Why this came up in October 2026

On the night of Tuesday, October 20, 2026, Toledo Fire & Rescue responded to a release from a tanker at 1266 Progress Ave (MC Tank Terminal) in north Toledo. Per the City of Toledo, the steps were:

  • 10:48 pm Oct 20: evacuation ordered within a 1-mile radius.
  • 4:24 am Oct 21: shelter in place within a 3-mile radius.
  • 5:00 pm Oct 21: evacuation zone reduced to 1/2 mile; shelter in place lifted.
  • 10:30 am Oct 22: evacuation zone reduced to 1/4 mile.
  • 12:00 pm Oct 23: evacuation lifted. All roads and waterways have reopened.

The material was glycidyl methacrylate. US EPA is overseeing cleanup and air monitoring, and the city says tap water was not affected. Source: City of Toledo, "Hazardous Materials Evacuation Orders Lifted", last updated Oct 26, 2026, 7:31 am, read Oct 26, 2026. For health questions, the city lists the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department hotline, 419-779-7089. Follow that page, not this one, for current status.

Step 1: Look up regulated facilities near an address

  • EPA ECHO (Enforcement and Compliance History Online): echo.epa.gov. Search by address or ZIP and a radius to see facilities with federal air, water, or hazardous waste permits, and their inspection and compliance history. (Site checked Oct 26, 2026.)
  • EPA Toxics Release Inventory: Envirofacts TRI search and the TRI Toolbox. These show facilities that report certain chemical releases each year, by location. (Checked Oct 26, 2026.)
  • Zoning map: the city or township zoning map shows industrial zoning near a street, which can change what gets built later.
  • Look at a map yourself: note rail lines, pipeline markers, tank farms, and port terminals within a mile or so, and which way the prevailing wind usually blows.

A facility appearing in these tools does not mean anything is wrong. It means it holds a permit or files reports. Read the compliance history, and ask the local fire department or Lucas County EMA if you have questions about a specific site.

Step 2: Sign up for Lucas County Alerts

Lucas County Alerts is the county's free opt-in system. It sends emergency alerts (tornado warnings, evacuation or shelter-in-place orders, snow emergency levels) and, for communities that use it, local notices by text, phone call, or email. Alerts are sent by area, so add your home address; you can add a work address too. Sign up at Lucas County Alerts. Source page read Oct 26, 2026.

  • Texts come from 89361 (the county says it moved from 89362 on April 28, 2025); emails come from [email protected]. Save them as a contact so they are not mistaken for spam. (Lucas County page, read Oct 26, 2026.)
  • Wireless Emergency Alerts for real emergencies reach compatible phones automatically. Lucas County EMA tests these and the outdoor sirens on the first Friday of each month; test alerts only show if you turn on test alerts in your phone settings. Source: Lucas County Emergency Notifications, read Oct 26, 2026.
  • A NOAA weather radio with the SAME feature is a backup if power or cell service fails (same county page).

The City of Toledo lists its website, Toledo Fire & Rescue social media, and Lucas County EMA alerts as official update channels during an incident (City of Toledo page above).

Step 3: A short household list

  • Know two ways out of your neighborhood.
  • Know how to turn off your furnace or HVAC fan, since shelter-in-place guidance often asks you to close windows and turn off ventilation that draws in outside air.
  • Keep a go-bag and medications ready.

For owners and renters comparing addresses

Ask the same questions for any house: what facilities are within a mile, what the zoning is nearby, and whether you are signed up for alerts at that address. Homes of Toledo is an information site, not a brokerage. It does not rate neighborhoods or the people who live in them.
